Why we love this plant!

A highly versatile and robust native grass, Creek Mat Rush is perfectly suited to South East Queensland’s waterways, slopes, and tough urban conditions. It forms dense, clumping growth, making it an excellent option for erosion control along creek beds, stormwater swales, or sloping gardens. In spring and summer, fragrant yellow flower spikes attract pollinators, contributing to local ecosystems. Thriving in both wet and dry conditions, it tolerates periodic flooding while remaining drought-resistant once established. Its resilience and ability to filter water make it a valuable choice for sustainable landscaping.

Care Considerations

Watering preferences:

  • Requires moderate to high watering, particularly in wet or riparian areas such as creek beds and drainage zones.
  • Tolerates short dry periods once established.

Mulching preferences:

  • Applying organic mulch may help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Fertilising preferences:

  • Minimal fertilisation is required, but a light feeding with a balanced fertiliser may encourage healthy growth.

Pruning preferences:

  • Removing dead or damaged foliage may help keep the plant looking fresh and tidy.

Good to Know:

  • Well-suited to South East Queensland’s high-rainfall areas, including wetlands and creek edges.
  • Very hardy, tolerating periodic flooding and heavy clay soils.
  • Flowers attract native bees.
  • Dense tussocks provide shelter for insects and small reptiles.
