Why we love this plant!

A robust and salt-tolerant coastal species, this fast-growing tree is well adapted to the coastal winds and sandy soils of South East Queensland. Its broad, heart-shaped leaves provide dense shade, making it an effective windbreak or privacy screen. The yellow flowers with a red centre bloom throughout the warmer months, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. It is well-suited to coastal gardens, tolerating salt spray, and also thrives in seasonally wet conditions, making it useful for low-lying areas prone to occasional flooding. Additionally, its strong root system helps stabilise soils in erosion-prone areas.

Care Considerations

Watering preferences:

  • Requires moderate watering until established.
  • Drought-tolerant once mature but benefits from additional watering in hot, dry periods.

Mulching preferences:

  • Applying organic mulch may help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

Fertilising preferences:

  • Fertilisation is not required but a balanced fertiliser during the growing season may encourage growth.

Pruning preferences:

  • Minimal pruning required, but the plant tolerates heavy pruning if size control is needed.

Good to Know:

  • Suitable for coastal South East Queensland as it tolerates salt, wind, and sandy soils.
  • Can be used as a hedge, feature tree, or shade provider.
