Why we love this plant!

One of the most adaptable Grevilleas for South East Queensland, this compact shrub offers year-round flowering, producing red and gold blooms that attract birds and beneficial insects. It grows well in sandy, loamy, or slightly clay-based soils, making it versatile for both coastal and hinterland gardens. It is highly suited to wildlife corridors, providing shelter and food sources in suburban and rural landscapes.

Care Considerations

Watering preferences:

  • Water regularly until established, then reduce frequency based on rainfall.
  • Drought-tolerant once established but may benefit from occasional deep watering in dry spells.

Mulching preferences:

  • Applying mulch may help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Fertilising preferences:

  • A low-phosphorus native fertiliser in spring and summer may support healthy growth and flowering.
  • Water in well after feeding to avoid leaf burn.

Pruning preferences:

  • Pruning after flowering may encourage bushy growth.
  • Trimming off spent flower heads may improve appearance and encourage new blooms.

Good to Know:

  • Some Grevilleas can cause skin irritation—if affected, wear protective clothing when handling.
  • Bird-attracting – frequented by Red Wattlebirds (Anthochaera carunculata) and New Holland Honeyeaters (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae).
  • Also supports native bees and butterflies.
