Why we love this plant!

A low-growing, creeping groundcover, Kidney Weed forms a dense, lush green carpet, making it an excellent alternative to traditional lawns. Thriving in South East Queensland’s subtropical climate, it performs well in shaded and semi-shaded areas, making it suitable for under trees, between pavers, and along pathways. Its soft foliage is tolerant to light foot traffic, making it a low-maintenance choice for courtyards, gardens, and natural landscaping. Beyond aesthetics, it plays an important role in erosion control, stabilising loose or sloped soils with its spreading root system. Highly adaptable, it thrives in moist, well-drained soils, but once established, it demonstrates drought tolerance. This versatile native plant is a great addition to eco-friendly and water-wise gardens where low-input greenery is needed.

Care Considerations

Watering preferences:

  • Regular watering during the first growing season may support a strong root system.
  • Once established, it is drought tolerant but may benefit from occasional deep watering in dry spells.

Mulching preferences:

  • Applying organic mulch may help retain moisture and suppress weeds, particularly when establishing.

Fertilising preferences:

  • Fertilisation is generally not required.
  • A light application of a balanced fertiliser during the growing season may support growth if needed.

Pruning preferences:

  • Pruning is not required but can be mowed or trimmed to control growth if desired.

Good to Know:

  • Prefers well-draining soil and can handle South East Queensland’s humidity well, though it may require additional moisture in sandy soils.
