Why we love this plant!

This vibrant Kangaroo Paw boasts striking scarlet-red flowers held on tall, slender stems, making it a standout choice for SEQ gardens. Its tubular blooms are a magnet for nectar-feeding birds like honeyeaters, as well as native bees, enhancing local biodiversity. Well-suited to SEQ’s warm climate, it thrives in full sun with well-drained soils and is tolerant of dry conditions once established. Its unique form and bold colour add texture and visual interest to borders, rockeries, and native garden beds. With minimal water needs and a long flowering season, this hardy perennial is ideal for low-maintenance landscapes while supporting the region’s native fauna.

Care Considerations

Watering preferences:

  • Maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods.
  • Once established, it exhibits some drought tolerance.

Mulching preferences:

  • Applying organic mulch may help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

Fertilising preferences:

  • A native fertiliser during the flowering season may support healthy growth and blooming.

Pruning preferences:

  • After flowering, cut back old flower stems close to the ground to encourage fresh growth.

Good to Know:

  • Prefers full sun to partial shade but may produce fewer blooms in lower light.
  • Adaptable to a variety of soils but thrives in well-draining, slightly acidic soils.
  • Nectar-feeding birds, including honeyeaters, drawn to its tubular flowers.
  • Native bees and other pollinators, supporting local biodiversity.
