Why we love this plant!

This coastal groundcover is well adapted to South East Queensland’s sandy soils and coastal conditions. It produces large, vibrant pink to purple flowers that bloom throughout the warmer months, providing an important nectar source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Its thick, fleshy foliage helps retain moisture, making it an excellent low-maintenance option for drought-prone areas. Commonly used for erosion control, it stabilises dunes, embankments, and sloped gardens, preventing soil loss in exposed locations. With edible flowers, fruit, and leaves, it has a long history of use in bush food and medicinal applications, adding both ecological and practical value to gardens.

Care Considerations

Watering preferences:

  • Requires minimal watering and is very drought tolerant once established.

Mulching preferences:

  • Applying organic mulch may help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Fertilising preferences:

  • Minimal fertilisation required, though a light application of a balanced, low-phosphorus fertiliser may be beneficial.

Pruning preferences:

  • Trimming after flowering may help maintain shape and encourage new growth.

Good to Know:

  • Spreads quickly, making it useful for erosion control and ground cover.
  • Produces edible fruit.
  • Thrives in sandy, coastal conditions and tolerates salt spray.
