Native to inland Australia, the Red-bud Mallee (Eucalyptus pachyphylla) has distinctive flower buds that are in a cluster of three, with the flower cap having five prominent ribs and a beaked operculum. The operculum, also known as a calyptra, is the cap-like covering of the flower that detaches as the flower opens. The flower that appears from under the cap is pale yellow. After flowering it produces a broad, shallow, conical to hemispherical fruit. The base of the mallee is a lignotuber, the lignotubers is a form of swelling at the base of the plant and are common to many mallee (Eucalyptus) trees. These help the tree to survive fires and other stresses, by sending out new growth in the event the top growth is destroyed.
